The decision was made through a Funding Agreement signed by Schools Minister, Lord Hill, at the Department for Education.

The new Academy will be sponsored by the Academies Enterprise Trust, with the aim of building on the recent academic progress of the former Shene School which is to close on 31st August.

The new Academy will be striving to become an outstanding comprehensive school for children of all abilities, as well as a vital resource for the local community. The chosen specialist subjects will be English, as well as Business with Maths and ICT.

The decision to establish a new Academy in Sheen followed a period of widespread consultation in the area which resulted in 84% of respondents in favour. Further consultations were held with students, staff and parents to decide the name, Richmond Park Academy, and a uniform. Ms Lesley Kirby, previously Head of Shene School will be Head of the Academy and Mr David Fuller, a highly experienced leader and former head of a number of independent, special and secondary schools, will be Executive Principal.

Ms Kirby said, "This is a wonderful opportunity for current and future students, staff and parents to build a highly successful school in Sheen which will be at the heart of this community. It is a chance for us to fulfil our ambitious plans and 'make our best better’."

Mr Fuller said, “I approach my role knowing that there is much to do to win the confidence of the local community and the local primary schools, but I have every expectation that Richmond Park Academy will become the school of choice for children, staff and parents. This is nothing less than they all deserve.”

Successful Uniform Sizing Session

The uniform sizing session on 14th July was a huge success with almost all of the existing and prospective students sized.
The next edition of the Richmond Park Newsletter will help you:

· Discover how the new uniform will look.
· Read about how the name was decided.
· Learn how the Richmond Park logo was designed.
· Hear from the Headteacher Designate and the Executive Principal.

In the first newsletter we asked you to help us find a name for the proposed new Academy from a shortlist of three provided by the Shene School community. The winning name was Richmond Park Academy.
The result was close but the winner with 53% of the votes cast was Richmond Park Academy.
The next stage was from the name to design a logo, or school badge, in a design competition.

From over 100 submissions four student entries were judged as the pick of the crop by Headteacher Ms Kirby and representatives of the Academies Enterprise Trust.

Congratulations to Pawel Tkacz, Faye Hahlo, Olivia Brouillard and Rebecca Anstee who worked with the design company Barber Jackson to produce the final design, pictured above.

Students have also been fully consulted on how their new Academy uniform should look. We listened carefully to their views and can confirm that it will consist of a black Savile Row style designed suit jacket with the Academy logo; a white shirt; a plain royal blue tie; a black v-neck jumper; black trousers or skirt; and a black rain jacket with the Academy logo . The P.E. kit will be navy and royal blue and will consist of a royal blue polo t-shirt, a navy and royal blue reversible multi-use sports top and navy jogging bottoms or shorts.

If the proposal for the new Academy gets the awaited Government approval all students will receive one set of these new items of uniform absolutely free of charge, but with some other uniform products available for purchase.

Richmond Park Academy Newsletter Issue 1
