Richmond Park Academy will be going through the process of re-applying for the Artsmark award in January. We hope very much that this time we will achieve Gold Award status.

Making a mark with 'Artsmark'

Richmond Park Academy is the only secondary school in Richmond to carry the prestigious Arts Council of England ‘Artsmark’. Following a lengthy and intensive examination of the quality of arts teaching at RPA, the diversity of courses on offer, the innovative learning tools and the standard of finished work in painting, sculpture, music, dance and drama, our students and staff were deemed to have reached the required levels of Arts Council excellence to win the award.

Ms Bea Fairbairn, Subject Leader, Music (who masterminded our Artsmark application), is already building on that success by introducing new methodology to the art of musical composition in the form of recently acquired state of the art software Sibelius and FL Studio. Getting to grips with the new equipment, RPA students are developing their knowledge of composition in classical notation format and pattern sequencing. They are acquiring the skills needed to write orchestral scores and to translate these into manuscripts or audio files.

Ms Fairbairn says: ‘This challenging experimentation is preparing our students for the kind of work they will soon be undertaking regularly in our new, fully equipped media suite and recording studio which will be one of the pivotal hubs of the current campus refurbishment’. What would Jean Sibelius, on an unscheduled ghostly visit, make of his 21st century software namesake? Probably lots more guineas for his purse as he added to his seven great symphonies by finally being able to finish his eighth … or even a ninth …
