The summer term was a busy term for reading!

At close of play in July, we had taken just under 5000 book quizzes in the year which means we read 101,114,187 words last school year!  And, furthermore, over 40 million words were read during the last term!

In the last 30 days of term, 85% of students in years 7, 8 and 9 took a quiz – this shows us that RPA is a real reading school with a reading culture becoming embedded into our day.  We received an email from Renaissance Learning to congratulate us on how successfully the school is using the Accelerated Reader programme.

The summer term rewards assemblies had a record amount of certificates being awarded to children for the number of books they had read.  Our top reader during the term was Mariam who received a Platinum certificate for 43 books read.  But we also had plenty of students receiving a Bronze certificate for reading over 10 books - I think more students are hoping to earn one of those this term.

We publicise so-called ‘word millionaires’ (students who have personally read over a million words by the end of the school year).  We finished last year with a total of 24 students and three staff members on our millionaire board.  Congratulations to Nkem (Yr 8) and Ikram (Yr 9) for being the top readers and reading over 5 million words each - that’s about 100 books each during 2011/12!

We also rewarded 7R2, 8R2 and 9R3 for being the tutor groups with the highest average book read per student.  I am looking forward to seeing who will win the class award in the autumn term.  Children earn stars for getting 100% of their questions right on the quizzes they take - these are then drawn out of a hat to win vouchers.  Congratulations to our top three winners, Chloe, Deniro and Tshokey.
