On a bright, but bitterly cold Wednesday afternoon, the Junior Girls Football team hosted Radnor House school in a friendly fixture. Having an unknown opposition seemed to unsettle the team, with a nervy and very defensive first ten minutes. Radnor House took advantage of this, as well as some hesitation from the defence, but some excellent saves from Amie meant that their pressure went unrewarded. Our back three then sprang into action, with Nerissa, Freya and Jaime making some solid tackles and turning over the ball for our midfield of Anya and Jade to begin the attack. From this point on, RPA were in control and never looked back. The team kept its structure well and passed the ball out wide, using both wings to create space for Kenny to unleash her lethal right boot and score two quick goals before half time.
A quick turnaround saw Amie return to the outfield and Joeliza take her place in goal. RPA controlled the match well in the second half, with Kenny securing a hat-trick very early on to give us a 3-0 lead. The defence of Nadejah and Freya went largely untroubled, which allowed Jaime to push up and boost the midfield, creating some fantastic scoring opportunities for the strikers. Some loose defence from Radnor House allowed Jade to sneak through and score in the bottom left corner, just edging it past the keepers hand. RPA now had their heads held high and confidence was soaring, with players pouncing on any loose ball and creating an attack. High work rates from Amie and Jaime in the midfield allowed Kenny and Jade to pepper the Radnor House goal with shots, with Jade scoring her hat-trick and taking the score to 6-0.
Radnor House then seemed to get a second wind, and with a few substitutions, began more of an attacking game. Nerissa and Freya worked well to shadow players in defence though, and timed their tackles perfectly to deny Radnor House any opportunities to score. RPA were seizing every opportunity to use each player in attack, and strung together some lovely passes in a passage of play which led to Jade scoring a scorcher of a goal with her left boot. 7-0 RPA! As the game approached its end, the shots were still being fired from all angles, producing some excellent saves from the Radnor House keeper. Their defence worked tirelessly, but a handball just outside the area gave RPA one last attacking chance. Jaime stepped up to take the free kick and instead of taking a shot at goal, gave a superb cross to an unmarked Jade on the other side of the area. With one touch to control the ball, Jade then pulled the trigger and fired her right boot at the ball, sending it flying straight into the back of the net! The final whistle blew and RPA celebrated a fine 8-0 victory, with a hat-trick to Kenny and 5 goals in the second half to a very happy Jade.
