20 students entered the competition bringing in their Victoria Sponge Cakes for round one. The standard was high and choosing 7 to go through was very difficult. It was noticeable that the judges felt the need for a number of slices to help with their decision making! The second round was a technical challenge with the remaining students baking scones from a set recipe within an hour, with no prior preparation time. All ingredients were provided. Again the standard was very high, and choosing two to go through was difficult as all the competitors had done so well.
Two Year 7 girls, Megan and Jeni, were in the final Showstopper round. They were given a week in advance to plan a Halloween themed bake, with only the basic ingredients being provided. Both girls produced excellent results. Megan produced spider-y cupcakes which were faultless. Jeni produced an orange-infused chocolate cake, baked in an orange skin to resemble a pumpkin. Again the judges found the final decision an incredibly difficult one but, in true Bake Off style, there had to be a winner and it was Jeni who prevailed with her creative bake.
Both girls will be awarded with a specially engraved wooden spoon, with Jeni also receiving a British Bake Off Cookbook. Well done to everyone who took part and huge congratulations to Jeni!
