Monday 25 June 2012 - World Sport Day

Every Secondary School, Academy and College in the Borough of Richmond upon Thames joined together to celebrate World Sport Day in an Olympic Torch Relay.  The Richmond School Sport Partnership planned and coordinated an Olympic Torch Relay around the Borough involving hundreds of students in one unique day to ‘Welcome the World to Richmond’.

Schools designed and created their own distinctive torches.  Each torch represented the individual schools’ values and acted as a 2012 gift of Friendship, Excellence and Respect, and was presented to another school along the relay route.

Eight torch bearers from ten secondary schools, two special schools and a sixth form college carried their torches around a route of over 18.5 miles.  Each school welcomed visiting torch bearers, conducted a handover ceremony and accepted the torch as a 2012 gift before setting their own torch bearers off on the next leg of the relay.
