On 19 October 2012, five of our students attended a Youth Summit at Heatham House in Twickenham.
Zac Goldsmith MP and Dr Vince Cable MP opened the proceedings with a question and answer session during which the students were able to put forward their points of view on many different topics ranging from those relating to public transport to the rise in university tuition fees. The guest speakers also addressed issues concerning the proposed change to the current modular approach to examinations, which provoked much audience participation.
This session was followed by assorted workshops, such as one based on mental health issues, which provided a great deal of information on where to go for help, and another on risky behaviour which was really good fun. Workshops focussing on young fathers, on what facilities are currently available in the Borough for young people and on youth participation were also available.
It was truly inspiring to see our students so interested in the subjects being discussed and, indeed, the sensible attitude with which they approached the event made it an honour to accompany them.
