Arriving at the impressive Victorian main room of Dartmoor House in Green Park, the Richmond Park Academy team were introduced to their opponents in two warm up workshops. After a practice debate on the legal status of drugs (won by a mixed school team headed by Syd), RPA were ready to face their first challenger.

Five girls from Wilson's School Sutton faced five boys from RPA. The motion was "THW* ban all sale of tobacco". Abdirahman soon put RPA into an early lead with his fluent speech on freedom and law and the opposition were left with few holes to pick. The Sutton team crumbled under the pressure of RPA questioning and the first round was a clear lead by RPA.

In the second round, a school from Redbridge proved much tougher opposition. Both teams put to use a vicious melee of questions to the opposition and played a focused and tactical game. RPA ended with a strong summary statement and edged their way into the final. The motion: "THW require all to pass a test on current affairs and politics before being allowed to vote"

The final, against Orleans park, was a mixed blessing. The opposition contradicted themselves in their arguments about the limits of comprehensive school teachers and RPA's team stood strong and defended a few key points with determination. RPA's Robert offered a varied and intelligent summary and the whole team felt that they had done their best. The Orleans team displayed an impressive amount of rhetorical skill and in the end they won the debate.

Orleans are borough champions for the second year running. RPA are in second place but their eyes are set on next year's title and perhaps other debates in the interval.

Man of the match: Daniel A with his endless pool of knowledge that was crucial in the team planning stage.

Team: Abdirahman H (captain), Sydney M, Robert H, Lawrence B and Daniel A.
