The Glorious Globe

On 2 March 2015, 27 Year 8 students from RPA went to see the play Othello. The play Othello was great and it was about two hours long. William Shakespeare wrote the play in 1603. The play was fabulous and I loved it. William Shakespeare was and is very famous and wrote lots of plays like Othello. We went to see the play in the Globe Theatre along the River Thames. The real one (the one that Shakespeare had built for his plays) burnt down because it was made out of wood, so they made a replica. In my opinion, I think the play was successful because you can see everyone was very excited at the beginning and everyone was very shocked with the unexpected ending; we couldn't believe Othello was capable of doing what he did.

The play opened with Roderigo, a rich and lovesick gentleman complaining to Iago that he has not told him about the secret marriage between Desdemona, the daughter of a senator, and Othello, a Moorish gentleman in the Venetian army. The play continues to look at how Othello is targeted by Iago, who secretly hates him.

There were no artificial lighting effects and I think this is because the director wanted to use the natural light instead. The scenery was great as when there was another scene the characters came on to the stage quickly and effectively. An example of a scenery was when two people slid down two ropes and excited the crowd. One of my favourite parts of the play is the costumes. I felt like I went back to the 17th century. It was a great play to watch. Each costume suited each character personally.

My favourite character in the play was Othello because he loved his wife a lot and his actions have shown bravery and curiosity. I also like him because he has the number one role in the play. He is a powerful character but his actions at the end of the play were not in the right manner as he killed his wife because he thought she was cheating on him.

Overall, I would rate Othello highly because the director of the play included some very tense scenes and the music suited the play's mood perfectly. It is a great play and I recommend it to teenagers.
