A busy week for RPA teams...

Report by Mr Costello

Tuesday saw the Year 7 boys football team lose to a very strong Ibstock Place School in a friendly at Palewell Common. Meanwhile the Year 9 girls netball team finished a creditable fifth place in the Borough Netball tournament at Waldegrave. The Year 8 boys basketball team performed very strongly in their first fixture of the season against Orleans Park, and although they lost 36-18 there was a lot of promise for upcoming matches, especially through performances from Joel, Anton and Yasin.

On Wednesday six lucky Year 10 students were accompanied by Mr Giblin to the Barclay's ATP Tennis Finals at the O2 Arena. They were interviewed by Barclay's TV and were lucky enough to see Rafa Nadal defeat Thomas Byrdych from courtside seats. At Waldegrave, the Senior Netball team, missing several key players lost a close match to Christ's.

The Senior girls shook off Wednesday's defeat to place fourth at the Borough Netball Tournament on Thursday while RPA hosted a boys and girls six-a-side football tournament, facing teams from Barnes and East Sheen. The Year 7 girls went through the qualifying stages undefeated and ran out comfortable 5-0 winners in the final! Congratulations to Ella, Casey, Manuela, Danielle, Nada, Cody and Florence! The boys tournament provided a chance for those who had not played for the school team to pull on the RPA jersey and represent the school. RPA red finished in fifth place and RPA blue won the third place play off. Congratulations to Barnes A who won the final 2-0.

RPA Year 9 Girls Basketball Team
Friday morning saw the Year 9 girls travel to St Mary's University to play in the Borough Basketball Tournament. Although inexperienced, the girls played brilliantly from the outset, inflicting a heavy defeat on Christ's in their first match. They reversed their kit colour to avoid a clash with Greycourt in the second match (much to the delight/awe of the Richmond Knights Officials) and backed up their opening performance by beating Grey Court convincingly, setting up a final against Teddington. They started the final slightly intimidated by the skilful Teddington team and went 7-0 down early. They gained confidence in the second half when allowed to play a full court press on defence and the tide of the game turned dramatically. A basket by Charlotte cut the deficit to three points with a minute remaining when play was stopped during a potential fast break for Anya when a Teddington player went down injured after diving for a loose ball. This gave Teddington the chance to recover on defence and they managed to hold the strong finishing RPA out until the final buzzer. A huge congratulations on their second placing to Anya, Charlotte, Jaymie-Lee, Amelia, Eve, Mary, Jade and Amy who were an absolute pleasure to coach!

RPA Year 9 Boys Rugby League team
The Year 9 boys played their first ever rugby league fixture at Grey Court on Friday afternoon. Looking resplendent in their new kit, they played fantastically well considering their inexperience and despite losing 26-4 and getting soaked, absolutely loved every minute of it!

The afternoon saw the Year 11 basketball team play their first fixture of the season against Grey Court. Some stellar team defence forced a number of turnovers, resulting in some easy fast break buckets to Billy and Axel, breaking open an early double-digit lead that would never be relinquished. Emre made a very strong début at both ends of the floor playing centre in a fantastic team effort. An effort to to reverse the ball and attack the offensive glass should see them go far this season. Well done to Nish, Dapo, Vadim, Leo, Rasharn, Craig, Billy, Emre and Axel.
