The Year 8 football team had the privilege of participating in the London AET football tournament which was held at Tottenham Hotspur's training ground in Chigwell on Wednesday 13 November. After a long journey from Sheen, the charming North Circular Road melted into the lush lawns of gated mansions and eventually the picturesque and perfectly manicured setting of Spurs Lodge. The team availed themselves of the impressive changing facilities and converged in the dining hall to await their pre-tournament briefing. After receiving their instructions they were escorted past the immaculate training pitches and into the giant marshmallow indoor dome to play indoors on the 3G surface.

Their first game was against an impressive Aylward Academy side who caught RPA napping with a blitzkrieg attack that netted two goals in the opening minutes. Although shell-shocked, RPA responded with some silky one touch football to halve the deficit with an excellent Unai strike before half time. They scored again early in the second half through Dillon and had Kaine in goal to thank for retaining parity as the game ended 2-2.

Their second match resulted in a very confident display and RPA ran out deserved 2-0 victors against Bexley Heath although they were fortunate not to rue missed chances when the final standings were calculated.

The third match saw RPA start in lightning fashion, creating five clear openings in the first half. Through a combination of outstanding goalkeeping and profligate finishing, the half time score was 0-0. As so often happens in football, Nightingale came out a different team and after forcing a pair of world class reaction saves from Kaine, predictably took the lead and immediately followed up with a second. Heads didn't drop, but RPA just couldn't find the quality to get back in the game.

Luckily their positive goal difference saw RPA make the final in a rematch of their first game against Aylward. RPA again started slowly and Kaine was put under pressure before the defence conceded a sloppy goal. This was followed by an outstanding finish by their rangy striker. RPA started the second half on the front foot and dragged a goal back to make for a tense last two minutes. Unfortunately RPA could not manage to force penalties and had to settle for second place and silver medals.

Congratulations to Kaine, Unai, Dillon, Joel, Lewis, Kyle, Shafeeq, Jake

Meanwhile, the Year 9 players who have been selected for the AET Lions squad attended a training session run by the Tottenham Hotspur's coaching staff, also held in the dome. They are preparing for several fixtures that are scheduled for the new year and an overseas trip is in the process of being planned.
