Report summaries by Mr J Costello
Friday saw both the Year 8 and 10 teams in action in the ESFA National Cup. Year 10 travelled to Slough to take on a strong St Bernard's team and battled well despite being slightly under strength. RPA started slowly after the long journey and the hosts proceeded to take a 4-0 lead in at half time. RPA showed great spirit to came back to 4-2 midway through the second half but ran out of time to make the opposition sweat too much.
Meanwhile the Year 8 team ran out comprehensive 5-0 winners over Ewell Castle at Palewell Common in the pouring rain. RPA put some excellent passages of play together and were 3-0 up at half time. The opposition created some half chances in the second half but it was RPA who showed a greater cutting edge with the front play of Unai working in tandem with wide players Lewis and Jordan. Dylan had his usual strong game along with Shafeeq, and Cameron should be pleased with his debut in goal, keeping a clean sheet. They will face much tougher tests in the upcoming weeks.
Monday's action saw Year 8 face a strong Royal Russell team in the first round of the Surrey Cup. RPA ended up victors on the right side of a nine-goal thriller, maintaining their unbeaten start to the season. Unai opened the scoring with a nicely taken finish with his right foot early on, but the visitor's pacey front two caused a lot of problems and deservedly scored to equalise on 10 minutes. Dylan put RPA ahead again with a fantastic free kick before Yasin showed great determination to forage into the box to finish coolly to give RPA a two-goal cushion. A defensive error let Royal Russell back into the match before Jordan scored an excellent goal to put RPA up 4-3 with 15 minutes left. Another excellent goal from the opposition striker equalised the score before the best piece of football in the match resulted in Kyle slamming home to give RPA the lead with 5 minutes on the clock. The drama had not ended however, as Royal Russell broke on the counter-attack and a mistimed challenge by Shafeeq conceded a penalty and gave the visitors a chance to force extra time. The striker lashed the ball goalward from the spot, only for Joel to produce an excellent save, tipping the ball over the bar! Cue the celebrations!
