The Year 7/8 basketball team rebounded from last week's defeat at the hands of Orleans Park to emerge victorious against Hampton Academy tonight. In what was only their second game, and with several players making their début, RPA started quickly racing to a 8-point lead early on, led by excellent ball handling and shooting by Joel and a dominant rebounding performance from Yasin. Mr Costello sat his starters to throw the new Year 7s in at the deep end and although their effort was excellent, the visitors quickly capitalised on some sloppy turnovers and defensive confusion. At quarter time the score was tied at eight. Hampton briefly took the lead but with the starting lineup restored, RPA steadied the ship and began contesting every shot and attacking the glass to take a 4-point lead into the half time break.

The second half was an even affair, with the visitors growing in confidence, especially their point guard and centre who gave the impressive Yasin a big challenge around the rim at both ends. RPA then went through a frustrating phase of poor ball movement and spacing and were lucky to keep a narrow lead going into the final quarter. With the game in the balance, RPA stepped up and made some big shots and began to defend more effectively to run out victors 26-19 in what was a very entertaining match!

The conditioning work in training also seems to be working as the team still had good energy levels in the fourth quarter.
