Jaded by the journey away, RPA found themselves two goals down within the first six minutes. Undeterred, they composed themselves and with a sterling performance by Mason P in midfield, they managed to force a penalty 20 minutes into the game, which Mason E converted – the sheer power of the shot was too much for the Ewell Castle goalkeeper who commendably managed to get a touch on the ball, 2-1 to Ewell castle. Many pundits maintain that immediately after a goal is scored this is a time when a team develops a false sense of security, leaving themselves open to attack, and this was proven to be the case on two occasions for RPA, consequently, Ewell were 3-1 up shortly after.
Tainton had the vision to realise that the Ewell goalkeeper was well out of position and fired a 30 metre shot which rocketed into the net, 3-2 to Ewell. Shortly before the break RPA made their first defensive error which Ewell capitalised on making it 4-2. Again RPA must be applauded and rewarded for their tenacity as Tainton hit the back of the net, 4-3 to Ewell. On this occasion lightening did strike twice and Ewell made it number five just two minutes later. Still fighting back RPA scored again, a second goal for Mason E, resulting in RPA being 5-4 down going into the break.
The second half could not have been more different. Both teams cancelled each other out throughout this half, but during the closing minutes of the game Ewell managed to score again resulting in a 6-4 win for Ewell Castle. In conclusion, the observers, whatever their loyalty, were exposed to an excellent and closely contended football match. Both teams had many positive experiences to take away with them. Well done to all concerned!
