The Year 10 football team kicked off their league campaign with a hard fought 1-0 victory over a competitive Teddington team yesterday thanks to a flash of brilliance from Tainton.

Playing their first competitive fixture on school grounds, RPA started slowly and could have easily seen themselves go a goal down in the opening skirmishes as Teddington's star player whistled two early attempts just past Alban's post. This slow start was particularly disappointing as we had stressed the importance of completing a full warm up in our PE theory lesson in the morning!

RPA regrouped and Scott and Qerim began to close the space that Teddington's central midfield duo had to work in, which changed the momentum of the match. The back four of Owen, Josh, Ahmed and Yisrael defended stoutly which restricted Teddington to speculative long range shots as their main hope of beating Alban. Midway through the first half Qerim broke up play in midfield and fed it to Tainton who swivelled and hit a low swerving right footed shot from 30 yards which clipped the inside of the post and bulged the net to give RPA the lead. The goal seemed to galvanise RPA and they played some good football thereafter, Mason came into the game and held it up well but both teams found it difficult to match their style of play to the surface which in the wet was particularly unforgiving of any long balls.

RPA's superior fitness levels came into play in the second half as Teddington seemed to run out of ideas going forward. RPA forced a series of corners and half chances, including a header from Ahmad and a dipping 35 yard strike from Scott which just cleared the crossbar to Teddington's relief. As is often the case in football, failure to seal the game nearly came back to haunt RPA. Teddington missed a gilt-edged chance to equalise from a corner and Alban made a fabulous save from a speculative shot from outside the box and a crucial save from in a one-on-one situation following a counter attack from an RPA corner. RPA saw out the final ten minutes in relative comfort to take the points in a tough encounter.
